The esteemed football figure has made clear that he is not seeking a re-entry into football management, explaining that it would be difficult to match the higher calling he encountered as the national team coach.
The former coach expressed his aim to channel his attention toward engaging young people and addressing what he called a dominant downbeat story currently found in the country.
Embracing Different Paths Outside of The Sport
In a recent radio interview, he was asked about talk linking him with available jobs in the English football and other leagues.
“Leading my country gave my work in football a deeper meaning and purpose,” he answered. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”
A Passion for Positive Examples
Ahead of the release of his new title, his leadership-focused book, Southgate shared that he is deeply committed about setting examples for the youth, applying insights from his tenure as England’s men’s football manager from 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.
He believes that his time coaching England, during which the team evolved from being widely disliked to broadly loved, holds general lessons.
“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he said. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”
Parenting and Influencing Youth
Reflecting on his role as a parent, the coach commented: “Every parent aims to provide a solid foundation, yet there comes a time when children stop heeding parental advice. I’ve faced this at home, just like others, and I believe this area is critically important.”
He went on: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”
Unity Over Discord
He asserted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the societal attention often highlights conflict.
“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he stated. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”
Southgate’s upcoming publication, titled Dear England, is scheduled to provide further insights on guidance and country pride inspired by his distinguished professional journey.
